Three big questions about the election

Header Picture
Only 6 days left until the election…

This is a time every four years where we can be pulled into the 24-hour news cycle. This is a time with lots of questions for navigating the road ahead.

There’s some good news, despite the rhetoric about this being “the most important election of our lifetime”. We have had presidential elections before, and we will have them again.

Of course, that doesn’t help you sleep from now until Nov. 3, so let’s answer some of the burning questions that we are hearing.

Is one political party better for my
investment portfolio than the other?
Take a deep breath. Elections historically have not made a difference in long-term investment returns, according to research by American Funds1. Regardless of whether a Democrat or Republican won the election, U.S. stocks have trended up2.
How has the market performed
historically in an election year?
The first five months of election years have had lower average returns and higher volatility. But markets have tended to bounce back and return to an upward trajectory after primaries end3.
Are there certain strategies for
investing that I should be following?
Maintain perspective, stay the course, and be sure to keep your long-term goals in mind.

The key takeaway

Markets have proven to be somewhat immune to political wins. It is important to remember that you are not invested in political parties or presidencies. You are invested in quality companies and own diversified portfolios.

Above all else, you are not alone.
